Cellar for up to 15 years. Decanting is optional, for 30-60 minutes before serving. Founded in 1989, Bodegas Felix Callejo is a family winery now entering its second generation. It is run by 4 members of the Callejo family and was founded by their parents, Felix and Pilar. The winery is found near the high-altitude village of Sotillo de la Ribera, in the Burgos province of northern Spain. Sotillo de la Ribera boasts a wide range of soils, from gravelly former river beds to clay loam. The winery draws from 27 vineyards in the region, growing a selection of delicious red wine grapes and smooth whites, including Albillo Mayor, Merlot, Garnacha, and Tempranillo. The latter is known as Tinto Fino in Sotillo de la Ribera and makes up the entirety of this substantial red wine. Harvested from a single vineyard with a base of gravel soils, the Majuelos de Callejo is a vibrant ruby red, with a highly aromatic nose. Look for scents of blueberry and plum, peppery spice, chocolate, leather, and toasty wood nuances. It reveals even more concentration on the palate, where red and black fruits prevail, along with nuances of cinnamon and nutmeg. The wine is underpinned by an excellent tannic structure and good, balanced acidity. It is full-bodied in the mouth, with a long, smooth finish. Pair it with grilled meats, or a rack of roast lamb.
