The end of Yugoslavia as we knew it came in 1992 which meant its appearance at the World Cup two years earlier was the tournament that brought down the curtain on a proud historical record of participation at eight World Cups and four European Championships. Yugoslavia qualified for that 1990 tournament unbeaten after topping a tough group ahead of Scotland and France. Stojkovic scored both goals in a 2-1 extra-time Round of 16 win over Spain to take the Yugoslavs into the Quarter Finals, but further progress was ended by an unfortunate penalty shoot out defeat to Argentina.
